The Supreme Court today affirmed the election
of Lady Margaret Okadigbo, wife of late former Senate President, Chuba
Okadigbo, and former Minister of State for FCT, Solomon Ewuga, as Senators of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Apex Court also ordered the removal of
Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Donor Agencies, Eseme
Eyibo from the House.
These decisions by the highest court put an
end to months of legal battle by contestants for the two arms of the National
Assembly.
The Supreme Court held that Lady
Margaret Okadigbo, was the validly nominated candidate of Peoples Democratic
Party for the Zone, after winning the primaries conducted by the legally recognized faction of the party.
The court also held that the appellant, John
Emeka, who brought the suit before it does not have the locus to have
instituted the appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision which returned
Lady Okadigbo since he did not participate in the primary.
The Anambra North senatorial district had not
had any form of representation at the upper legislative arm of the National
Assembly owing to the series of controversies that trailed the conduct of
primary election for the selection of the party’s candidate by various factions
of the highly fractured party in the state.
