FLOODING: OYO SACK CONTRACTOR, MARKS 15 BRIDGES FOR RECONSTRUCTION


Sequel to flooding of the state yesterday by torrential rainfall, the Oyo State Government has sacked the contractor handling the Apete bridge reconstruction owing to low pace of work.

The contract has been terminated while a new contractor is expected on site within 24 hours barring due process

Apete was one of the communities that suffered casualty last during last year August 26 torrential rainfall during which the bridge linking the community to the mainland was washed away killing four people including students of the Polytechnic Ibadan.

The community also suffered same fate yesterday when ravaging rain washed the make-shift, wooden pedestrian bridge was washed away with properties worth million of naira going with it

People of the community had complained that the contractor handling the project was not competent with the slow pace and pain being experienced by the people.

After their weekly executive council meeting, during which issue of flooding took the centre stage, Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Yunus Akintunde, told newsmen that the bridge, as well as 15 others damaged across by the flood would undergo urgent reconstruction

They executive lamented that the state is hampered from demolishing the structures woing to injunctions secured by the owners against the government.
