In a war-like manner,armed robbers,
engaged policemen in a
gun-battle, killing three officers.
The officers were simply indentified as two Corporals and one rank and file.
The incident, which occured at Ijemo-Agbadu areaa of the Abeokuta
South Local Government in Ogun State, also left two other policemen
injured.
The bandits were said to have stormed one The Apostolic Church in the
area, carting away unspecified amount of money and other valuables.
They later laid ambush and opened fire on policemen who have acted on
a distress call.
One of the priest, Pastor Jacob Taiwo told our correspondent that the
incident recorded the third time robbers would invade the vicarage.
The Police Public Relations Office, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the
incident, describing members of the robbery gang as professionals.
He disclosed that a member of the gang, who had coffessed to the
crime, had been nabbed, adding that the command had commenced
investigation to unravel the mistery behind the event.
Adejobi said Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the state Police
Commissioner, Mr. Okoye Ikemfuna had visited the injured police
officers at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba.
He urged members of the public to go on with there day-to-day routine
as the command is on top of the situation.
Adejobi noted that the command sympathized with relatives of the deceased.
He aded, "we are happy in one side that we have a suspect now
because when they left, they were following Abeokuta-Lagos express
way, going back to Lagos with the Jeep and they have already snatched
the Jeep to operate.
He said the gang laater ran out of fuel and asked the suspect to
provide them with fuel but he (the suspect) was apprehended based on
intelligence gathering.
"I think there was not fuel in the jeep again and one of them had to
put a call through to somebody to get fuel for them.
"One of the victims, who might have been in the car with them quickly
made called one of our men who quickly mobilised others to be on red
alert and fortunately for us, we saw a man on bike with fuel.
Meanwhile Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has directed security agencies to track down the criminals whose activities led to the death of five police officers and two civilians in the state and bring them to justice.
The governor disclosed this at the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta when he visited the officers injured
While assuring citizens of Ogun of adequate security, Amosun said he had ordered the Police and other security agencies to fish out the bandits especially those among them that sustained injuries and bring them to justice.
Amosun said the officers would not die in vain, promising that government would take care of the families of the deceased and those that sustained injuries.
While commiserating with the families of the deceased, he promised government's continuous support for security agents to ensure a crime-free state.
