The debate over the desirability of State
Police entered another phase on Tuesday with 2 separate groups submitting
reports making recommendations against the policy.
President Goodluck Jonathan at State House, Abuja, received 2 separate reports from the Presidential Committee on Police Reform and the Forum of former Inspectors-General of Police.
The debate over the introDuction of State Police has heated up in the last few months with the Nigeria Governors Forum endorsing the creation of State Police
But the sensitive nature of the debate caused the Northern Governors Forum to back out of its support for creation of state police
But there are indications that even the National Assembly has decided to include the creation of State Police as one of the points on the agenda of constitutional amendment
The Executive arm of government has kept a dignified silence as the debate rages on but has mobilized stakeholders to deliberate on issues for reform of the Police
The first is the Presidential Committee on Police Reform led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Parry Osayande.
The second is the Forum of former Inspectors General of Police who say historical antecedents show that introduction of State Police will be an invitation to anarchy
Beyond the State Police issue, the two groups agree on the financial autonomy of the Office of the Inspector General of Police.
