Former Director-General, NAFDAC and
former Nigeria Minister of Information and Communications, Prof Dora Akunyili
has called for better remuneration as well as proper training for security
agencies with aim of assisting in fighting corruption in the country.
Akunyili who identified corruption,
insecurity, poor leadership, among other vices as obstacles to transformation
in the country.
Akunyili who spoke as guest speaker
at the Bells University of Technology in Ota area of Ogun State during the
College lecture Series VII with theme 'National Transformation: the Challenges
of our Time' said "corruption is at the heart of our problems as a people
and as a nation."
Also said the worst of form of
corruption was the one regarded to as looting and eating the hen with the
eggs.
Akunyili called on the National Assembly to use the window of
opportunity presented by the ongoing attempt to amend the Nigerian Constitution
to remove the state of origin clause from the constitution, saying it has
contributed towards destroying the spirit of oneness and patriotism among
Nigerians.
She also charged National Assembly that there may need to insert
harsher clauses to make corruption less attractive, noting "the truth is
that if we do not punish corruption, then we are actually promoting it.
