Court Sentences 3 Persons To Death By Hanging For Allegedly Assassinating Five Chiefs

A high court in Port Harcourt has sentenced three persons to death by hanging for allegedly assassinating five chiefs of Kula Kingdom and four others in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The accused persons SOPAKIRITE IGBIKIS, OTEME-OFORI SOLOMON and CHRISTIAN DON PEDRO were convicted on a ten count charge of murder and conspiracy.

Justice S. C. AMADI of the Rivers State High Court found the accused persons guilty of murder and conspiracy.

The former Chairman of the Kula Council of Chiefs DAN OPUSINGI and eight others were allegedly attacked and killed by gunmen on their way to Kula from Abonnema on boat in January 2007.

Counsel to one of the convicted persons SOSEPIRIYE LONGWILLIAMS expressed dissatisfaction at the judgment. He said they will appeal the judgment.

The private prosecutor of the case OTONYE AMACHREE said the judgment shows that there is a day of reckoning for murderers.
