NO GOING BACK ON RENAMING OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS; FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SAYS MKO ABIOLA DESERVES THE HONOUR

The Federal Government on seems disinclined reverse itself on the renaming of the University of Lagos to the MKO Abiola University despite  the controversy surrounding the decision

Expressing disappointment at the negative politics being played on the issue Information Minister Labaran Maku and President's Spokesman Reuben Abati said the President acted in good faith

The spokesmen of Government say there is a deliberate misinterpretation of the President's motives as his decision was based on the need to appreciate past heroes who died to ensure democratic growth in the country

They insist that since inception of democracy no preceding governments had considered immortalising the late MKO Abiola for paying the supreme sacrifice to entrench democracy in the land

And addressing the legal arguments picking holes in the decision government argues that the President took this decision as the visitor of the University.

There is the danger that the protests are overshadowing the true significance of  President Jonathan's gesture

Besides, the President's renaming of a Federal University is not the first decision of its kind

It will however be interesting to see if government will engage in dialogue or whether a Bill will be sent to the National Assembly seeking a change of the Institution's name.
