A Federal High Court
sitting in Lagos has declared that it is unconstitutional for the Federal Road
Safety Corps to impose new number plates on motorists.
Justice James Tsoho delivered
the judgment in a suit filed by a lawyer, Emmanuel Ofoegbu, challenging the
powers of the FRSC to issue the new number plates.
The judge held that the
corps cannot force Nigerians to acquire new number plates by impounding cars,
without the backing of any legislation to that effect.
He said the act of the
respondent amounts to an arbitrary use of power.
