The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 12, 2012 as public holiday.
In a statement signed by Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Akin Olajide, the government said it declared the day, earmarked as Democracy Day, to remember the anniversary of the June 12, 1993 elections, believed to be the freest and fairest election in the electoral history of Nigeria. The election was believed to have been warned by late Chief MKO Abiola. The government said the anniversary was also in recognition of the martyrdom of Chief Abiola, who laid down his life for Nigerians to enjoy the democratic dividends of today. |
