Fire Destroys 50 Shops, Two Houses At Ogunpa Market Ibadan


No fewer than 50 lock-up stalls and three bungalow buildings were ealry today destroyed as fired razed down structures at labaowo Market in popular Ogunpa market in Ibadan North local government.

Tears flowed uncontrollably today in ibadan among traders at the popular Labaowo market as they watched helplessly while fire destroyed their life savings worth millions of naira.

Our man reports that the fire which started at  about 9am  gutted  four houses which included three bungalows and a storey building  and destroyed over 50 shops.

The roofs, windows and ceilings of the buildings were badly affected by the inferno while the chemical section of the market  as well as part of those selling keys, padlocks and paints   were razed  down by the fire.

It was learnt that before the arrival of the men of the Oyo State Fire Service, sympathizers who thronged the area tried to put off the fire but could not achieved much with the fire spreading.

The fire service men who came after about one hour that the fire started battled to extinguish the fire for close to two hours before they finally succeeded in putting it off.
The men of the state fire service who complained of shortage of water came to the scene with four fire tankers.

Speaking with journalists, the state Director of Fire Service, Mr. Kareem Oyegunle Gafari,  said the cause of the fire was yet to be known, assuring  that his men would investigate the incident.

But an eyewitness who refused to disclose her name, said the fire broke out when one of the traders was filling a chemical gum into a jerry can.

She explained that a trader at  the chemical section of the market  was  trying to fill a customer’s jerry can with  gum and suddenly fire just broke out  with  lot of explosives around the area
