EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO RECALL THE US MILITARY COMMAND FOR AFRICA, ALSO KNOWN AS AFRICOM, BACK HOME, LESS THAN FIVE YEARS AFTER IT BEGAN OPERATION.
INFORMATION MADE AVAILABLE BY A CLOSE SOURCE AT THE PENTAGON IN WASHINGTON INDICATES THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS UNDER PRESSURE TO RELOCATE AFRICOM HEADQUARTERS FROM STUTTGART, GERMANY, DUE TO THE PROBLEM OF FUNDING AS A RESULT OF THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS WHICH HIT THE U.S.
OUR CORRESPONDENT WAS MADE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THOSE PUSHING FOR THE RECALL BELIEVE THAT THE MONEY PUMPED INTO AFRICOM COULD SERVE THE U.S ECONOMY BETTER IF THE COMAND WAS BASED AT HOME.
IT IS ALSO BELIEVED IN SOME QUARTERS THAT THE MOVE COULD BE THE FALLOUT OF THE FRUSTRATION OF FAILING TO ACHIVE THE ORIGINAL MANDATE OF THE U.S AFRICA COMMAND, WHICH WAS ALLEGEDLY INTENDED TO MILITARISE AFRICA BY SETTING UP MILITARY BASES ACROSS THE CONTINENT.
ALTHOUGH THAT CLAIM IS CURRENTLY BEING DENIED BY THE PENTAGON, BUT A US-BASED PAN-AFRICAN ORGANISATION KNOWN AS TRANS-AFRICA, WHICH WAS IN THE FOREFRONT OF THE RESISTANCE AGAINST AFRICOM, CONTINUES TO INSIST THAT WAS THE REAL INTENTION.
THE DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH OF THE ORGANISATION, MWIZA MUTHALI SAID AFRICA SHOULD NOT ALWAYS EXPECT THAT ANY U.S INTERVENTION WOULD BE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CONTINENT.
