Nigeria spends N635 Billion on wheat importation annually---Agric Minister



 The Minister of Agriculture, Doctor  Akinwumi  Adesina, described as wasteful and misplaced priority, how Nigerians spent an average of N635 billion to import wheat into the country  for bread production yearly.

He made the Statement during the flag off of the Cassava Bread Initiative in Ado Ekiti, and that the measure geared the Federal
Government to opt for Cassava bread option in Nigeria rather than spending heavily on importation of wheat for bread production.
                             
These bread is made out of cassava and it taste good like a wetness bread it was said that it is economical. the Minister added that Nigerians expended a sum of N10 billion to import food items overseas annually, which he described as wasteful and inimical to the growth of local agricultural products.
                       

The Minister opined that the country must increase its productive capacity in Agriculture and rely heavily on made in Nigeria products for the Federal Government to be able to hit its proposed 20 million jobs for Nigerians in 2015 .


The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, promised adequate funding for cassava growers in the State, said about 20,000 jobs will be generated under the Commercial Agriculture before 2014,with special bias for the growth of Cassava.

 The Minister  opined that the country must increase its productive capacity in Agriculture and rely heavily on made in Nigeria products for the Federal Government to be able to hit its proposed 20 million jobs for Nigerians in 2015 .

The controversy over the proposed introduction of Five Thousand Naira note by the Central Bank of Nigeria has assumed a new dimension with protesters storming the head office of the Apex bank in Abuja.
