The
police on Tuesday in Abuja arraigned a 35-year-old mechanic, Emmanuel Udo, and
36-year-old surveyor, Ahmed Suleiman, in a Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court for
criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and theft.
The
police prosecutor, Cpl. Emmanuel Adikwu, told the court that Amaefala Chimezie
of Lungi Street, off Cairo Street, Wuse 2, Abuja, reported the matter at the
Maitama Police Station on July 18.
Adikwu
said that when Udo and Suleiman were asked to tow some buses belonging to
Global Resource Nig. Ltd from Maitama to Lugbe, they stole three gear boxes
valued at N1.2 million, from the buses.
He
said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97, 312 and 287 of the
Penal Code.
If
convicted, the accused, who pleaded not guilty, are liable to seven years in
prison or fine or both.
Counsel
to the accused, Mr John Chindu, prayed the court to grant his clients bail on
liberal terms.
Citing
Section 36 of the 1999 constitution, Chindu said his clients are presumed
innocent until proven guilty.
The
Magistrate, Mr Shuaibu Usman, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N1
million with one surety each in like sum.
Usman
ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and
adjourned the case to Oct. 16 for hearing.
