A Rivers
State High Court has adjourned till the sixth of August to rule on whether the
Attorney General of Rivers State can take over the prosecution of the Leader of
the Rivers State House of Assembly Chidi Lloyd.
Chidi
Lloyd is standing trial on a six count charge of conspiracy to murder and
assault, attempted murder and malicious damage in a face-off on the floor of
the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Justice Nyordee
adjourned the matter after the Rivers State Commissioner for Justice Worgu Boms
indicated interest to take over the prosecution of Chidi Lloyd from the police.
Rivers
State Commissioner of Justice told the court that he is empowered by the
constitution to take over prosecution of any criminal matter in the state.
However
counsel to the Nigeria Police Chika Denwigwe in his argument said such power
can only be exercised when the accused person has been arraigned to plead
guilty or not in a criminal case.
Chidi
Lloyd was returned to the custody of the Nigeria Police till next week Tuesday
of adjournment of the case.
