Thirteen people have been confirmed dead in a plane crash near the
Murtala Muhammed International airport; Lagos.
The Associated Airlines plane which was conveying the body of former
Ondo state governor, Doctor Olusegun Agagu to Akure, crashed a minute after
take-off.
The Ondo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Deji Falae, the
boss of MIC Undertakers, Olatunji Okusanya and his son, were among those who
died in the crash.
However, the son of the late governor, Feyi Agagu, Femi Akinsanya and
five others, survived the crash.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Mukhtar Usman said an emergency centre has been set up for the families of the
victims.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency,
Doctor Femi Okeosanyintolu
said the casket bearing the remains of Agagu was
recovered intact.
The Chief Operating Officer of Associated Aviation Limited, Alhaji Taiwo Raji has in the meantime said that the plane which crashed yesterday had its
last maintenance on the fourteenth of June this year.
He said the airline has a valid insurance cover for the aircraft with
Sema Insurance and Nigeria Re-Insurance.
Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah said investigations into the plane crash
had begun.
Oduah in a statement issued in Abuja, added that the Black Box of the
ill-fated plane had been recovered and handed over to the Accident
Investigation Bureau.
Meanwhile, the final burial rites of former Ondo state governor, Doctor
Olusegun Agagu, are to be held today in his hometown in Ondo state.
The body was reportedly transported by road to Ondo state yesterday
after the plane crash.
