“Lagos Is Safe for Igbo and their Businesses”. Joe Igbokwe

The  Lagos State chapter of the  defunct Action Congress of Nigeria has lashed out at those who are playing cheap and dirty politics by the decision of the Lagos State government to move some homeless, indigent citizens to their home states for rehabilitation.

The party said that no sane government would be blackmailed into allowing homeless Nigerians to continue to inflict security and environmental problems to its state just to please those that readily play lousy and retrogressive politics with issues for their selfish and ulterior interests.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Joe Igbokwe, the party said it is particularly irked by the decision of some professional chance takers and political opportunists to take advantage of the recent movement of some indigent, homeless and social miscreants to Onitsha for the purpose of re-connecting with their families when they have no tangible business in Lagos.

The party said there should be an end to opportunistic politics and cheap ethnic and tribal politics as are being played out over the issue. The party said that transporting indigent, homeless miscreants to their home states is not a new idea and not limited to Igbos.

FAAN Md Visits Oshiomhole, Apologises

Authorities of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has apologized to the Edo State Government and air travelers over the incident which led to the closure of the Benin Airport on Tuesday.

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria Managing Director, Mr. George Uriesi who led other management staff which included Mr. Yakubu Dati, General Manager, Mr. Kolawole Adefomiwa, Deputy General Manager, Mr. Adeboye Festus, the Chief Security Officer and Mr. Ayodele Sunday, Airport Manager, Benin City said “they deeply regreted the events of yesterday and we will like to find out how we can avoid a situation like this arising in the future, because it is neither in the interest of FAAN nor in the interest of Edo State Government for the Airport to be closed down, because there was a lot of hardship and serious economic consequences as a result of the shutdown and there is need to settle this matter.

In his response, Governor Oshiomhole noted that tax law was a federal law which the state Government is only trying to implement.

He noted that the tax which FAAN defaulted on was the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) which even the President and Governors pay.

Oshiomhole said the State Board of Internal Revenue got a proper Court Order to seal the FAAN Manager’s Office, noting that the FAAN Manager on his own decided to seal up the Airport to gain public sympathy.

The Governor said the problem with Nigeria is not immunity, but impunity as people often violate the law and get away with it.

APC's Registration Good For Nigeria Development-Erubami

The Nigeria Voters Assembly has said the registration of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is a welcome development that will engender a virile opposition and deepen democratic values.

A release signed by its president Comrade Mashood Erubami and made available to our man in Ibadan said APC's registration will no doubt fill the wide gap left open by the absence of a strong, competent, better and non-tribal opposition party to serve as an alternative platform for qualitative change and the correction of all malaise which have been undermining internal democracy, and posing serious threat to peaceful democratic transition in the country.

According to him, the existence of a virile opposition working with a truly Independent Electoral Commission like INEC no doubt will end the era of electoral impunity, help recruit courageous, credible and legitimate leaders who possess the capacity to run a government that will correct the anomalies in the economy, redefine the state of the Nation, engage the hands of million youths through revolutionary transformation of the rural environment, and ultimately entrench hope for welfare and security among the people.

At-last; INEC Registers APC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the application by three political parties - the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Part and Congress for Progressive Cange to merge into one, to be known as the All Progressives Congress.

On considering the application, the Commission found that the applicant-parties have met all statutory requirements for the merger, and has accordingly granted their request.

Consequently, the Commission has approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the applicant-parties, and the issuance of a single certificate to the All Progressives Congress.

The National University Commission today emerged victorious as the court of appeal set aside the decision of the lower court over NUC's invalidation of Law Faculty of the Lead City University Ibadan.

The mood at the court was sober as students and parents could not hold their emotions as the judgment went against their interest.

It said the law of the university remains invalid until accredited by the NUC.

In a Unanimous decision, the Justices held that the Lead city university carried out illegal admission by admitting students to Study law three years (2005) before it was given approval by NUC to establish a law Faculty (2008) even without accreditation.

The Lead judgment delivered by Justice Chidi Nwaoma Uwa said whereas lead city university was granted license to establish Private university on 9th June 2005, the institution admitted students to study Law on 22nd May 2005.

The NUC had declared the Law of the Institution as Invalid for failing to meet the requirements for setting up a Law faculty as well as denied students graduated without accreditation to proceed to law school.

A student of the university Segun Alli who graduated with 1st Class in Law initiated the suit.

Justice Uwa ruled the plaintiff lacked locus to institute the case saying the battle was between NUC and Lead city University.

He said the student was an illegal and cannot benefit from his illegality.

The Justices said approval to set up a law faculty is not the same as accreditation of the course.

Counsel to Lead City University, S.Ola Oni thanked the Justices for the judgment adding that the university will do the appropriate things and ensure accreditation of the Course.

The Justice warned parents to get the requisite information before putting their wards in a university.
